UNTO THE RIGHT HONOURABLE THE DUKE OF NEWCASTLE, HER MAJESTY'S PRIN-

CIPAL SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES ;

THE MEMORIAL OF ANDREW SHORTREDE, residing in Hongkong, Sheweth,

With reference to the Memorial of the 21st July, addressed to Your Grace by the undersigned, he begs respectfully to state, that the Chief Justice of Hongkong has this day decided, "with regret," that the Act of Parliament 6 & 7 Victoria Cap. 96, (Lord Campbell's Act,) is no longer applicable to the Colony; that it was in operation here up to the 6th of May, 1846--but was then abolished, so far as concerns Hongkong, by the local Ordinance No. 2 of 1846. All which is humbly represented to Your Grace.

HONGKONG, 5th August, 1853.

And your Memorialist will ever pray,
